NEWS: MySpace offers news recommendations

News/Social Networks/Myspace
Found: hosted.ap.org

Last week Myspace jumped into the "News Service Business" and with it's non-Digg like features (the rating system is based on a scale of 1 through 5) I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised but Newsvine is still my favorite site for news-aggregation and Mike Davidson is still my hero!

Hosted AP post:

The popular online hangout MySpace entered the news business Thursday with a feature that lets its users determine what items other members see.

MySpace News brings to a much larger audience the user-recommendation capabilities already available through Digg and Time Warner Inc.'s Netscape. It also marks the site's further inroads into becoming an Internet portal akin to Yahoo Inc. and others.

NEWS: Beyond Google: Social Media Engines First, Other Search Engines Second

News/Social Bookmarking/Google/David Sullivan
Found on: searchengineland.com

According to Sullivan's post on Seacrch Engine Land, people that are looking beyond Google to search the internet are flocking to social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit -- this could mean big trouble for Yahoo and MSN.

Search Engine Land post:

I've never encouraged a "Google First" or "Google Only" mentality for search marketers to follow. This is where you focus only on Google, figuring the other major search engines don't matter. But over the past few weeks, I've found myself more and more thinking that if you want to go beyond Google as a search marketer, the other search engines that matter first are the "social media search engines." After them come the other major general purpose search engines like Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask.

News/Social Networks/Digg/Jim Messenger
Found on: famousagents.com

Systems designed to exploit, scam or cheat social networking sites like Digg, Reddit, and Delicious have been making headlines recently on several prominent blogs and websites - what's up with that?

Famousagents.com post:

Scammers, schemers, and cheaters watch out! Over 700 of you just got caught.

Recently, some “entrepreneurial” folks have built systems designed to exploit - or cheat - social networking sites like Digg, Reddit, and Delicious. These exploit-the-social-network-sites have even received attention from the likes of TechCrunch and CNet.

SpikeTheVote.com has been at the forefront of the corrupt movement, and interest was amplified when the owner of the site decided to sell it.

When we learned that it was available on Ebay, we immediately jumped at the opportunity to shut down a scheme that attempts to undermine the legitimacy of Digg’s voting system. We thought, “Hey, we’ll buy it and turn it over to Digg. That way future cheaters might think twice before starting or joining such networks.”
