NEWS: YouTube/CNN Presidential Debate - Tonight

Web Culture/YouTube/Videos
Found on: Youtube.com

In a matter of hours, the first of two Democratic Presidential debates will be underway, a debate that will be driven entirely on questions submitted via YouTube . The debate will be broadcast live on CNN tonight at 7 P.M. Eastern time - hmm, this could either be totally groundbreaking or utterly ridiculous.

YouTube Post:

This summer and fall, YouTube, CNN and a few engaged and engaging citizens will make political history by having the presidential candidates answer questions submitted via YouTube videos.

The first debate will feature the Democratic candidates on July 23rd in Charleston, South Carolina. Submit your question for the Democrats between June 14 and July 22 (the earlier the better). The CNN political team will choose the most creative and compelling videos, and if yours is one of them, you may get the chance to fly to Charleston to watch the debate live and offer your reactions afterward on YouTube's political video blog, Citizentube.

p.s. instead of arguing, some of you, especially the antagonistic ones trying to demean the others, should
invest your time in learning basics of ENGLISH GRAMMAR and taking advantage of that junk spam to increase your penis sizes as that's a pretty good explanation for your inferiority complexes expressed through insipid racist and other incompetent remarks.

NEWS: GDC 2007: Phil Harrison, Sony, Unveil 'Home'

News/Social Networks/Sony/Games
Found on: 1up.com

Sony's set to muscle in on Second Life and their market share with their forthcoming online social media metaverse called, "Home", should be available as a free download for the PlayStation 3 in autumn 2007.

1UP post:

Last week's reports on Sony's potential 'Home' service either generated even more hype for Phil Harrison's Game Developer Conference keynote or stole the thunder from Sony's big unveiling. Maybe it did both, and considering what Sony showed with 'Home' -- that may not be a bad thing.

Home is officially being branded as a "3D user community for PlayStation 3" by Sony, but it's also being called an "innovative user community title," effectively blurring the line between "service" and "game." The two-pronged approach to marketing this product may show some confusion as to what home is. That's a question Sony won't be able to answer until this Fall, when PlayStation 3 owners will get their hands on the final free download (the experience enters beta next month).

NEWS: Man Behind the Clinton Clip Worked for Obama's Net Strategists

News/YouTube/Video/Politics
Found on: washingtonpost.com

With the presidential elections still a good two years away the fight for the democratic seat just got really nasty and the fireworks are already starting to fly - yeah, I'm talking about the Hilary video that's running viral on YouTube, "allegedly" sanctioned by Obama's camp.

Washingtonpost.com post:

The creator of a controversial YouTube clip that attacked Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) was an employee of the Internet strategy firm on the payroll of the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

"I made the 'Vote Different' ad because I wanted to express my feelings about the Democratic primary, and because I wanted to show that an individual citizen can affect the process," Phil de Vellis wrote on the liberal blog Huffington Post.

NEWS: Fox subpoenas YouTube after "24" clips posted

News/Web Culture/YouTube/Andrew Wallenstein
Found on: today.reuters.co.uk

Someone's in big trouble...Fox just served YouTube with a subpoena to try to identify the person or persons that uploaded entire episodes of their hit series "24" and "The Simpsons".

Some of the episodes of 24 actually appeared on YouTube prior to the premiere of the new season - yikes!

Reuters UK post:

20th Century Fox served YouTube with a subpoena Wednesday demanding the Google-owned viral video site disclose the identity of a user who uploaded copies of entire recent episodes of primetime series "24" and "The Simpsons."

The subpoena, which first came to light on the blog Google Watch (http://googlewatch.eweek.com/index.html), was granted by a judge in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California after being filed by the News Corp.-owned studio on January 18. It is not yet known whether YouTube has complied with the request.

In addition, a second, lesser-known video site, LiveDigital, was also served with a similar subpoena.

Second Life Screening of Four Eyed Monsters - Update

Web Culture/Second Life/Video

Well, the premiere SL screening of "Four Eyed Monsters" came and went and wouldn't you know it, I was no where near a computer...long story, but it had something to do with the wife and meeting friends for drinks -- in the "real world", crazy. Anyway, I found these videos on Youtube, it's some guy who taped himself watching the movie, although the commentary is a bit annoying, it's still pretty cool -- rock on Sundance Channel.

Who's Lonely Now?

Web Culture/Myspace/YouTube
Found on: Popyourit!

Jessica RoseLonelygirl15 is a fictional video blog staring super cute New Zealand actress Jessica Lee Rose as the rebellious and sometimes silly Bree. The bedroom confessions of Lonelygirl15 has become one of the most viewed YouTube series to date and has garnered international attention.

Lonelygirl15's blurbs:

What can I say? Hmmm my name is Bree. I'm homeschooled, so I guess that makes me a freak. Not! I don't care about a lot of the same things people talk about on MySpace and YouTube, but I'm trying to learn :). A lot people requested that I come on here too...so here I am just trying to learn. Hope you like it :)

I copied most of this stuff from my YouTube profile because I'm lazy (urrrrghghghg)

Declared as the "Face of YouTube", Lonelygirl15 remains the site's quintessential form of self expression .

NEWS: YouTube releases top-10 video list for 2006

News/Social Networks/YouTube/Videos
Found on: ctv.ca

The Associated Press names the top 10 most "SIGNIFICANT" YouTube videos of 2006, with Lonelygirl15 topping the list.

CTV post:

Lonelygirl15 leads the pack on AP's top-10 YouTube video list for 2006

1. The face of YouTube: The cute, bedroom confessions of Lonelygirl15 remain the site's quintessential expression. Of course, the pretty high schooler named Bree was eventually revealed to be 19-year-old actress Jessica Lee Rose, who was acting out a scripted plot with two behind-the-scenes producers. But that strange mutated duality of what's real and what's fiction, what's amateur and what's professional, remains the heart and soul of YouTube, where everybody and nobody is a star.

2. Network wake-up call: "Saturday Night Live's'' "Lazy Sunday'' mock-rap sketch was, in some ways, what started the revolution. The video was seen by more than five million viewers before NBC asked YouTube to remove it in February. Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg's rhymes boosted the hipness of "SNL,'' but more importantly, it was the first time networks were alerted to their new competition. NBC reacted fearfully, and later opted to built up its own websites with online video. The networks continue to experiment with YouTube. Recently, CBS has claimed its late shows have increased in ratings after posting clips from "The Late Show with David Letterman'' and "The Late Late Show'' on YouTube.

3. Political fallout: YouTube, like the Internet in general, has made it a specialty to reveal the gaffes and mistakes of the establishment. Of course, few would say Virginia Sen. George Allen didn't deserve his fate after a video of him calling a rival campaign staffer "macaca'' drew constant clicks on YouTube. Allen went on to lose an extremely close election -- a race that YouTube could well have turned. On the other end of the spectrum, Michael J. Fox's tremulous campaign ads for various Democratic candidates who support stem cell research proved powerfully effective and were seen by millions more than would have otherwise caught them on TV.

NEWS: StumbleUpon offers auto discovery of online videos

Social Networks/Web Culture/Video/Eric Auchard
Found on: reuters.com

With over 1.6 million registered users, look who just jumped into the online video search frenzy.

Reuters post:

StumbleUpon, which helps Web users discover sites based on the ratings of users with similar tastes, on Wednesday said it was offering a way to create personalized channels for viewing online video.

Stumble Video provides a way to watch a stream of videos from popular video sites YouTube, Google Video and MySpace that are automatically matched to individual interests, the company said.

While online video search systems have proliferated over the past year, discovering what to watch typically depends on simple popularity rating systems or text searches that count on the user guessing what terms were used to label the video.

YouTube Explains the Mystery of Home Page Picks

Social Networks/Web Culture/YouTube/Mark Glaser
Found on: pbs.org

Mark Glaser's blog post tries to demystify the process YouTube uses to select which videos make it onto their home page.

He also questions the legitimacy of certain videos on YouTube's "Most Viewed" pages (not to mention censoring negative comments on it's videos.) and the techniques some marketers are using to promote their videos like hacking the system with programs to boost their view count.

MediaShift Post:

Mark Day, a friend of mine in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been trying to break into stand-up comedy for the past year. Recently, he got a big break by having one of his brief video comic bits — The Smiley Intervention — featured on the front page of YouTube . Not long after getting in the featured spot, his video shot up to 750,000 views, and he got hundreds of new subscribers to his YouTube channel, the home of his videos.

Day is a savvy marketing guy, so I wondered what he had done to win that slot. Did he contact YouTube to tout his videos? Did he pay for the featured slot? No and no. He attributed his success to finding topics that are timely — like George Bush’s backrub of German Chancellor Angela Merkel — and keeping his videos short and (bitter)sweet.

I reached out to a few folks who had videos featured on YouTube’s home page, and they all said they hadn’t contacted YouTube or paid for the slots. However, in one case, video director Brett Mazurek told me he had met with YouTube staff and shown them a trailer for his documentary on Ugandan hip-hop, which was featured on YouTube’s home page earlier this week.

Youtube Video: PS3 vs. Wii Commercial

Some of my favorite comments:

i thought this commercial was so simple it was brilliant. The "hot chick" represents the wii as a cheap, affordable, easy system who's main purpose is FUN. While the PS3 tries way too hard to get all fancy that it is simply too fat and complicated.

And the Xbox 360 would be an Angelina Jolie or a Carmen Electra

"I'm large and in charge . . ." Hahaha. Good commercial.
